Urban Cottage Industries, the British lighting company who produce designer bespoke lighting under their Factorylux brand are out and bout this week for London Design Festival with their new retail pop-up on Brick Lane – literally a double decker van – bringing their factory in Yorkshire on wheels to London.
Factorylux began life with the founders salvaging, restoring and reselling original light fittings from redundant factories and mills in Yorkshire and bringing them to the interior designers of London. It grew and developed a UK manufacturing arm to become the first, and then largest supplier of a comprehensive range of high quality interchangeable modular lighting, with clients from The Soho House Group M&S and Levis – through to Martin Scorsese (for the film, Hugo). And now – their offering has since been brought directly to the consumer through it’s pioneering ‘Made For You’ offering – the world’s first next day bespoke lighting service. Using their bespoke online lighting design service, you can select the components, lamps, and flex from a massive range of high-quality, stylish and colourful products and then your chosen design is made the very next morning and shipped out to you straight away.
To date Factorylux have sold online only – but they’ve now taken to the road with a brand new retail experience – a cool mobile retail and workshop unit to bring their Made for You lights directly to the consumer, cutting out the middle man. The Van will start it’s journey at a prime location at London’s Truman Brewery offering consumers the opportunity to choose the different parts of their light in person. This fully immersive showroom on wheels hot-wires you right into the heart of their factory in Yorkshire, where you can create your own tailor made lighting – at a price never previously possible.
From this weekend, Factorylux on #TheVan will also be holding an interactive exhibition where you can experience the smart lighting of the future – combining their signature industrial style, with home automation apps.
